While I loved this book equally as much as Divine Rivals, it was very different. The story was less Winnow/Kitt romance, & more Dacre/Enva war story. Roman & Iris spent much of the book apart. Roman acting as Dacre’s war correspondent; Iris trying to find him. Making contact through wardrobe letters, slowly reconnecting, gaining trust; trying to get Roman to remember. Roman falling in love with Iris all over again, regaining his memory & then ultimately having to stay apart so they could work together to end the war. The few precious moments they had together were electric, and I yearned for more. I understand why things had to play out the way they did. I’m not saying I thoroughly enjoyed the sad, yet bittersweet happy ending, but I get it. No one comes away from a war 100% unscathed.
Two divinely intertwined, tortured individuals begin as rivals. They slowly take their armor off through the protection of magical letters & fall in love. War tears them apart, tears them down, & tries to break them. It almost does. But, in the end, love conquers all.
“I pray that my days will be long at your side. Let me fill and satisfy every longing in your soul. May your hand be in mine, by sun and by night. Let our breaths twine and our blood become one, until our bones return to dust. Even then, may I find your soul still sworn to mine.”
(Not going to lie, I kind of hope we get a Attie & Tobais story. I’d read the heck out of that.)
